Does anyone still read this?

As I was trying to reconnect with an old friend, I had to use my xanga contacts.  In doing so, I realized how outdated mine is.  For those of you who still depend on xanga, I apologize.  I am always on facebook these days.

An overview of the family...

Mike is still the Pastor to Families with Youth at Bethel Baptist Church.  He loves it.  He and Pastor John Bouquet work really well together and make a great team.  We have been approved to purchase a home through Habitat for Humanity and will be able to move in later this month.  We are very excited about our first home!!

I spend my days at home with Lucy and am loving it.  She is 20 months now and is into everything!  She loves to help me clean, do laundry and dishes (which now takes me much longer to do, but I enjoy the company...most times!).  She loves to wrestle with her daddy and torment our dog, Roscoe.  She has the sweetest giggle I have ever heard and cannot understand why the Lord gave her to us, but am glad He did!!!

Baby # 2 is on the way.  Derrick Arthur Eaton is set to enter the world on October 13th, 2008.  The first half of the pregnancy was rough with the "morning" sickness and forgetfulness, but I am out of that phase and feeling great.  We cannot wait to meet this little guy.  Lucy is very intuned with babies right now.  She is also developing her own mothering instincts with her baby dolls and stuffed animals.

That's about it for now.  I have been slacking when it comes to picture taking, so I will just post some from a couple of months ago.

Rattled Book Tour

A few months ago, I heard Trish Berg spoke at our areas MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) meeting.  She was such an encouragement and I have decided to help her promote her book through my xanga and facebook pages.  Read through the end to see how you can receive a FREE book!

RATTLED-SURVIVING YOUR BABY’S FIRST YEAR WITHOUT LOSING YOUR COOL!

Can you change a diaper faster than a rodeo cowboy ropes a calf? Need more sleep, more laughter, and ten minutes in the bathroom – alone?

You must be a mom….Don’t let the clutter, chaos, exhaustion and Cheerio-dust get you Rattled.

With practical advice and scriptural reminders, author Trish Berg can help you not only survive the chaos and clutter of motherhood, but get back to the simple joy of being a mom.

I am excited to welcome Trish Berg, joining us today to talk about her new mom book, Rattled, Surviving Your Baby’s First Year without Losing Your Cool!

trish bergbook

Trish is a national speaker for Hearts at Home, author of The Great American Supper Swap and Rattled. She has been published in Today’s Christian Woman, MOMSense, CBN.com, P31 WOMAN, and numerous regional and national publications.

Trish earned her MBA before leaving the workforce for motherhood, and then earned her Doctorate in Diaper Changing in Ohio where she and her husband, Mike, keep busy raising their four children on their family cattle farm.

Trish, welcome. Thanks for taking time to be with us today.

Thanks for having me.

Your newest book, Rattled, Surviving Your Baby’s First Year without Losing Your Cool! Why is it so easy for moms to get rattled during their baby’s first year?

Motherhood is simply draining and exhausting. Hands down the toughest job I have ever had.

But moms are not alone, and I want moms to know that God walks with them through these exhausting years.

I also want to help moms simplify the small stuff with practical tips and ideas, so they can get back to the joy of being a mom.

That sounds great. Now you have survived the first year of motherhood 4 times over. What do you think stresses moms out the most, especially during that first year?

I think moms put a lot of pressure on themselves to do it all by themselves, and to do it all the right way. They need to simplify, let go of many details, and ask for help, from their husbands, and from family, neighbors and friends.

Rattled actually begins by looking at the months of pregnancy. How can moms use this time to prepare to survive baby’s first year?

Nine months is not nearly enough time to fully prepare for motherhood. I am not sure there is enough time to fully prepare.

I remember when our first child, Hannah, was born; I felt that my world had been turned upside down.

Hannah did not like to sleep, and so we spent many nights walking the floor, bouncing her up and down, trying desperately to settle her down.

My husband, Mike, and I took turns walking laps around the house, like the Indy 500 with a lot more bouncing.

I am not sure I could have prepared for that.

But during your pregnancy, you can prepare in other ways. Like arranging for help in big and little ways. Ask a girlfriend if you she can help you one afternoon a week so you can grab a nap. Ask your mom or mother-in-law if they can spend one day with you each week during the first few months.

Just knowing someone is coming in the morning to help with the baby or the laundry, giving you time to nap or just another adult to talk to can make the all night soirées a little easier.

You talk about surviving motherhood. How do you help moms do that?

In Rattled, I talk about a mom’s survival kit. If you were thrown out into the wilderness, you would need FOOD, SHELTER, FIRE and WATER to survive. Those are the must-haves, the needed things to get through to the next day. Without them, you would perish.

Well, moms have been thrown out into the wilderness of motherhood, and to survive, they will need those same things:

Water from the word (2 Samuel 22:3a) –To be in God’s Word

A fire like desire for prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17) – Moms can pray their way through their day

Nourishment body, mind and spirit (1 Corinthians 13:13) – Love on all levels nourishes us

Shelter from life’s storms (Proverbs 17:17)-Friends to lean on, trust, and support us.

In Rattled, I spend some time talking about how moms can use that survival kit to get through the wild adventure of motherhood.

You spent a lot of time listening to what other mothers had to say. Share with us your best advice for new moms.

I would tell moms to relax. No one does it right all the time. Let the laundry pile up. Leave the dishes in the sink, and just enjoy holding your baby today.

Don’t worry about doing "it" right, just enjoy the moments you have.

That’s sound advice.

But what about the dads out there. What are dads going through during this tumultuous first year of parenthood?

Dads are just as insecure as moms are about parenthood. Even more so in many cases.

Moms do much of the baby feeding; diaper changing, and baby care. So dads can sometimes feel left out, and incapable of caring for their own baby.

Dads need a vote of confidence, encouragement and praise in their fathering.

One thing moms can do is encourage dad to be involved, let him change the baby’s diapers, bathe the baby, rock the baby to sleep.

But in order to involve dad, moms must let go of "their way" of doing things, and let dad discover his own way.

For example. When Hannah was a baby, every time Mike would change her diaper, I would cringe at the way he did it.

I tried to teach him how to put his fingers under the leg elastic and pull out to make sure it wasn’t bunched up, preventing a future leak.

My way was the only way to change a diaper, or so I thought.

But every time I criticized him, he stepped back and became less involved. And you know what? Even when I did the change her diapers the "right way" they still sometimes leaked.

I finally learned to let Mike change her diaper his own way. I let him put her to bed his way, bathe her his way, dress her his own way, and be the dad God wanted him to be.

That can be difficult for moms who can tend to be slight control freaks when it comes to baby care.

But let me just encourage you that the help you will get from dad if you can let go of those details will bless you in more ways than you can imagine!

Now, I want to touch on the loss you faced. In Rattled you’re very open about the loss of your own pregnancy in 2002. How has that loss changed your outlook on motherhood?

I in the early part of the second trimester of my fourth pregnancy when I went in for a regular check up. I was not having any problems at all, and went in alone.

My OB/GYN performed an ultrasound just to check for twins, and suddenly my world turned upside down when he could not find a heart beat.

I was completely devastated. Mike and I had two weeks of further testing before we had assurance that our baby had died. And through it all, I prayed for a miracle, my miracle, that my baby would be alive again.

But in the end, God’s miracle was not that my baby survived. God’s miracle was the reassurance that He used me as a vessel to bring a tiny soul to Heaven.

A year later, I lost another child to miscarriage, and had to lean on God even more.

Because of those losses, today, I have a greater sense of love and appreciation for my four children here on earth, and truly enjoy just being with my kids.

I see it this way. I have four children here whom I hug with my arms, and two babies in Heaven whom I can only hug with my heart for now.

Today you’re the mom of 4 happy and healthy children. What do you see as the greatest blessing about being a mom?

I would say learning patience, but my husband would laugh out loud at that…since I am probably one of the most impatient people there is.

So I guess I would have to say enjoying the journey. I live Psalm 118:24 every day of my life.

"This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it."

Life is messy. Things break. Kids get sick. But moms need to remember to enjoy the journey no matter where the journey leads.

Today at the Berg house, our washing machine is broken. Our mini van needs new tires. We are hanging onto Mike’s 1986 Jeep on a wing and a prayer, hoping it makes it another year or so.

There is mud on my kitchen floor, crumbs on my carpet, and I can honestly say that I love my life. Just as it is.

Now, I certainly have moments where I get stressed and discouraged, and can even lose my temper ( just ask my kids), but I am also learning to enjoy each moment of every day as a gift from God.

And thorough it all, my simple hope and prayer is that I can be the mom that God wants me to be.

A Fun Weekend

FRIDAY

We had a lock-in which involved several churches in the area.  We expected about 100 people and 173 people showed up!  We ran it similar to a WOL Superbowl...we had a super-rally where Hubby and Caleb Hamm ran program and got the kids excited, an awesome worship team was there and the gospel was presented.  At the invitation, 7 teens made decisions for Christ!  Woohoo!  I was able to counsel a gal who was saved a few years ago, but has made poor decisions and felt far from the Lord.  What an honor it was to present truth to her that no matter how far she felt from the Lord, He was not far from her!  She was so encouraged to know that her Savior still loves her and wants to have that precious relationship with her!  She is going to talk with her youth leader and ask for accountability.  One of our jr. highers brought a friend who accepted Christ as His personal Savior!  Too cool!  Afterwards, we had the gym open for dodgeball and basketball, a media room with XBOX and wii and also a room with carpetball, foosball and ping pong.  The kids had a blast!  Around 3, we went bowling and had various competition.  I am proud to admit I won the prize for being the first person to get a strike bowling granny-style!  Afterwards, we went back to the church to clean up and headed home for some much needed rest.  Thanks Wayne and Caleb for your hard work!

SATURDAY

I was able to sleep for about 2 1/2 hours and then it was time to prep for Lucy's party.  (Note to self...never schedule a lock-in the night before your child's birthday party!)  I was kinda stressed because it has been a long time since I had been to a child's party.  I knew that there would be a bunch of kids attending and I was not sure how to entertain them.  Praise the Lord, our church has a playground right next to the pavillion.  The kids had a great time and the parents enjoyed talking as well.  I had a craft for the kiddos to work on as well.  From what I could see, it was a hit!  And now for the part you are waiting for...the pictures!

We gave Lucy her own cake and let her take control.  She sampled a little bite...

We had a great time.  We praise the Lord for all the loving people he has placed in our lives.  He blesses us with so much!

SUNDAY

This month, we have been focused on being a team.  We have been split up into 5 teams within the congregation and have had to do several assignments such as send encouragement cards, visit nursing homes, have a meal together and have a prayer chain.  Each week, our worship service became more and more festive.  Today was the last week of competition...we had pews marked off for each team, we had a high school mascot for one team and our team even scored the Ashland University football jerseys sinced they matched our team colors!  Since Pastor John is on our team, he preached in his jersey!  I love it!  The final challenge is scheduled for next week and it is getting involved with the various ministries of our Sunday morning.  One team will be the cleaning crew, one team will be the meet and greet crew, one team will lead worship, another will do a drama and one team will work with the children in the nursery and jr. church.  I can't wait!  Now we will see what is in the heart of our members.  It's easy to come in with your team cheer and noisemakers with the motivataion being points in a competition.  It is another thing when there are no points...just people...serving people.

Our pastor challenged us today by saying that we should not be looking forward to going to heaven in order to get rid of our problems. (debt, health, etc.)  We need to realize that when Christ comes to take His children home, about 2/3 of the people we know will not be coming with us.  That should spur us on to the unfinished work that lays before us.  I was sure convicted of that.  There is a woman who lives in the apartment above me who just moved here from China.  She has no religious background and I believe the Lord is working on her.  I pray that I will be faithful and will share my testimony with her and that her eyes would be enlightened to the gospel.  Please pray for Karen that the Lord will prepare her heart and that I would follow through with opportunities to share.

I hope you have enjoyed this update.  I am just loving this abundant life that the Lord has given me.  For those of you on Facebook, I have that up and running.  I must say that I like xanga better for the pictures and journal, but hey, that's just me!  Blessings!

A BIG MONTH!!!

FINALLY!!!  A post from me...I know, I know.  I royally stink at this.  To top it off, I signed up for Facebook, but have not even done anything with that yet.  My time will come.

Lots of updates...not a lot of time...here is a brief recap...

Vacation was a blast.  We had a great time with the Carters...

We went to Great Escape one day and met up with a bunch of friends, including Liz Soucy, as pictured above.  The kids and I got our tough faces on in the water park.  Lucy joined Nicole and Austin for a bubble bath.  And finally, a family picture at the Big Chicken!  We had a great time!

We went apple picking with friends of our from the church earlier this month.  Here is a pic of Lucy and her friends...

She was also able to reap the "fruit" of her hard work!  How cute!

We just celebrated our first year in Ohio, as a youth pastor and as parents!  Yes, Lucy is one year now.  She is just a cutie!  She is eating everything with no problems and has even begun walking this past week.  We will have a party for her this Saturday.  I will do my best to get pictures on here shortly afterwards.

We have begun our second year of youth group and are so excited about it!  We are more confident and clued in to what we are supposed to do-which is a good thing!  We also have an incredible team of youth leaders serving with us which is such a blessing!

Mike and I celebrated our third anniversary this month.  He took Lucy and I to a beautiful garden and we were able to get some great photos.
